The 6 Most Lethal Cancers
Cancer is a deadly disease that is often very difficult to treat. But not all cancer types are the same. Some are far more likely to kill than others. Here are the 6 cancers with the worst survival outlook:
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer, one the most common cancers in India, is very difficult to treat despite having many treatment options available. Lung cancer is frequently caused by smoking but there are other factors that also increase the risk for lung cancer.
Bile Duct Cancer and Liver Cancer
Although these cancers are not as common as lung cancer, they are even deadlier. Surgeries are often complicated and the extent of cancer is not fully known till the patient is already cut open.
Mesothelioma Cancer
Commonly found on the chest and lungs, mesothelioma can be also found on other organs. Less than 1 in every 10 patients will survive as chemotherapy and radiation therapy usually do not work. In the future, immunotherapy may become a promising option for patients.
Pancreatic Cancer
Standard treatments such surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy help only a few percentage of patients. As most patients do not respond to therapy, doctors may focus on quality of life.
Heart Cancer
Although an extremely rare cancer, heart cancer has no good treatment options. Often heart cancer is not a primary cancer but a cancer spread to the heart (metastasized) from another body part.
Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine (Brain) Cancer Survival
The location of this cancer, in the middle of the brain stem, makes it very difficult to target. Surgery is usually not possible and targeted therapies don’t easily cross the blood-brain barrier. As the cancer grows and spreads quickly to the surrounding regions of the brain, treatment becomes nearly impossible. Less than 1% of patients survive 5 years.
