Bone Cancer Causes
Most people with these symptoms do not have bone cancer but other possible conditions. However, if you experience such symptoms for more than two weeks, a specialist medical check-up is indicated.Causes and risk factors for bone cancer
Genetic disorders
There are several hereditary syndromes caused by mutations that are considered risk factors for bone cancer, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Rothmund-Thompson syndrome, and mutant retinoblastoma gene (associated with rare eye cancer) all associated with an increased risk of developing osteosarcoma among children. Also, there are multiple multiple exostoses (also known as multiple osteochondrotic syndromes), a legacy affection associated with the formation of cartilage swelling.
Paget\’s disease
This non-cancerous condition that causes bone fragility is considered a risk factor for bone cancer. It has been associated with the development of bone cancer in about 1% of individuals (Paget\’s disease of the breast, a rare form of breast cancer not related to Paget\’s disease of the bone).
Multiple Enhondromatosis
Patients with multiple benign cartilage tumors, known as encondrom, are at increased risk for chondrosarcoma.
Excessive radiation exposure
Bone exposure at high doses of radiation, such as when radiotherapy is used to treat another form of cancer, may increase the risk of primary bone cancer in those areas. This risk is higher in young adults. Radioactive minerals, such as radius or strontium, can accumulate in the bones and can also cause primary bone cancers.
Bone marrow transplantation
People who have undergone a bone marrow transplant for the treatment of another condition may be at increased risk of developing osteosarcoma.
