Bone Cancer Treatment
Treatment depends on the type of bone cancer, the area where it is located, its aggressiveness and its spread.
Surgery
Surgery consists of removing the tumor from the bone tissue. If a small part of the tumor is not removed, the cancer cells can continue to grow and spread.
The limb rescue surgery involves removal of the tumor without amputation of the limb. The surgeon can take a bone from another part of the body to replace the lost bone (bone graft) or insert an artificial bone. In some cases, limb amputation is required.
Radiotherapy
It is used to treat cancer of the bones or other cancers. It assumes the use of ionizing radiation to destroy cells of a cancerous nature and stop them from growing and spreading to other areas of the body. Radiotherapy can help patients completely destroy the tumor, relieve pain in most types of cancer, reduce the tumor making it much easier to surgically remove and eliminate cancer cells left behind by surgery.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy involves using drugs to treat cancer. In particular, it involves the destruction of cancer cells. In some cases, chemotherapy can completely destroy bone cancer cells. At the same time, this type of treatment can delay or prevent the onset of cancer and the spread of cancer cells. Chemotherapy also helps alleviate symptoms in patients with advanced cancer.
Often, doctors choose to combine several types of treatment so that the patient\’s chance of survival increases.
What is the success rate of bone cancer? what are the chances of survival?
The success of bone cancer treatment depends largely on areas spreading to the other parts of the body. If cancer was localized and it has not spread, the prognosis is usually good.
