Lungs are vital organs in the human body for breathing and gas exchange. Lung cancer is a medical condition that causes abnormal cells to divide in the lungs uncontrollably. This uncontrolled division of cells leads to the development of tumors and it reduces a person’s ability to breathe normally.
Benign vs Malignant Tumors
Some of these abnormal cells can grow into non-cancerous cells that can cause benign tumors andsome cells can spread beyond the lungs by the process of metastasis into other parts of the body and cause a metastatic tumor. Lung cancer in India is the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women and it claims more lives each year as compared to blood, colon, prostate, ovarian and breast cancers.
Smoking and Lung Cancer
Smoking is the major cause of lung cancer in India because the cigarette is full of cancer-causing substances and doctors believe smoking causes lung cancer by damaging the cells that line the lungs. About 85% of lung cancer cases are caused by cigarettes. The risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked by a person.
